I'm also trying to set up a Podcast (using Garageband with the audio which is 1 hour long, so people can download onto mp3 players and listen to it when they want, audience interaction.
go to www.carolinewenham.com
This blog was set up as a basis for my research for my degree in Photography and Media Arts at UCA. It has now become something that I can use for a variety of work, a place I can collate research and work and as a link to my website. www.carolinewenham.com | info@carolinewenham.com

plan.
I'm going to come in tomorrow and set everything up, just so its all organised for the following day.
considering making a mdf low bench for people to sit on whilst listening to audio through headphones.
Also creating little cards, that say something like " To give your opinions or comments about this work go to www.carolinewenham.com/blog ' this way i am able to incorparate my website more into my work rather then leaving it just to research.

Other potential outcomes:
other outcomes of work could be:
1.) Book with images and transcript/quotes of what i collected when in liverpool.
2.) Interactive website where the viewer can click on one of the slide images to hear a fragment of audio.
3.) a podcast where the audio can be downloaded to an mp3 device and listened to in their own time or before viewing the slides at an exhibition.

Thursday 15th Nov "Surgery" Tutorials any problems, need to be sorted here:
RESEARCH:
-Patrick Keiller 'Robinson in Space' / 'London' (pyschogeographical) --> Book in library, well the still images are included next to the transcript of the film (this is something i could potentially do as i ave written out the transcript to my audio)
*ANACHRONISTIC: Something thats out of place in this time. (e.g using the slide projector could be seen as anachronistic as digital has over taken analogue means of displaying images.)

Dreamweaver
Well no not really, I am still having problems with this rollover button? I will hopefully be able to speak to someone tommorrow?
Some of the new slides that i had taken didn't come out that well, due to relying on an automatic camera, due to time limitations in hindsight i needed longer then i could have set up tripod, etc. I still managed to get about 2hours or so of audio in which me and my father try to find the places depicted in the slides. the audio can seem quite mundane in places, but i find the ambient sounds quite interesting.
RESEARCH:
-Janet Cardiff (Her soundscapes/walks)
-Tacita Dean "Trying to find Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty"
-Melanie Friend (Kosovo War)
-Robert Smithson
I could have two slide projectors set up with at least 3 of the slides that match up well, or just the one slide that stays motionless against the archaic noise of the slide projector, which suits this project. i have the image on a crisp white wall (havn't decided how large to have the image, perhaps quite small) and then invite the viewer to put on headphones where they can emerse themselves in the audio i 'collected' whilst up in Liverpool.
Audio can be edited in final cut pro, then put onto a cassette, a cassette fits better into my work then saving it to cd, i want the work to be on walkman so the person chooses to listen rather then be bombarded with loud audio when they walk in, it becomes intimate, like someone listening into someone elses conversation perhaps even following them. surveillance.

LIVERPOOL Wednesday 7th November 2007
Went to Liverpool to collect images and audio, I wanted to create like an audio tour as I try to find these places depicted in the slides. I took a analogue camera with slide film in so I can create modern depicitions of the slides, to show what has changed, whether these places still existed. I didn't manage to find all these places as I was restricted by time, in hindsight it would have been better to stay overnight rather then try to fit everything into 1 day.

Going to liverpool tomorrow, I plan to take edirol audio device as a way of recording ambient noises of the areas depicted in the slides. Also recording an audio tour type of journey as i try to find these places to re-photograph. i will also take a 35mm camera with colour slide film and digital camera.

Photoshop Workshop..5/11/07
looking at Adobe imageready as another way of producing a web page other then flash or dreamweaver,
there is a 10 second viral advertising mini project for the 12th nov, which has to use some form of digital manipulation... a potential outcome could be a 'youtube' video.

Silke / Gary Workshop ... 29/10/07
Need to borrow an audio recorder (edirol) to record ambient noises.
idea of creating a book as a potential outcome for this project, the idea of the found object.
look at:- Martin Parr (his collection. i.e watches of Saddam Hussein) 'Boring Postcards' book
- John Hinde
what makes a book?/keep fonts simple/ rhythm in book.

..?
I have really been contemplating going to liverpool to look more in depth into the places the images were taken. If i were to go by train it would take about 4.20 hours. ?? i would need to plan it properly, but it's something i could do next week. i like the idea of re-photographing these areas, as they are quite banal, seeing what has changed if anything, documenting my journey around liverpool as i try to find these places, the slides are tagged and stat where they are so it's not just guessing.
TUTORIAL with Gareth . . . 26/10/07
TUTORIAL: a podcast can be created using garageband. Difference between slide projection and digital, Filming the projection?
things to do: - get maps of the area depicted in the slides.
- go to liverpool and visit these places ? Re-photograph (audio tour)
use final cut pro (ideal for editing, phasing in and out,etc --> podcast
Use a cast, talkng about slides, fictionalise. (Lee and Tony) group of people talking like its them who took the images, went to these places, etc.
use a dictaphone > record the background/ambient noise then layer it with the 'talk' over the top to create layers.

Open Day 25/10/07
Open day:
This didn't relate to my project, but looking at digitial media through the use of projectors and video cameras allows ideas to be generated in how to create an installation and could be something i use in the future.

'The Conversation' by Francis Ford Coppola
Extract from the 1974 film 'The Conversation' by F.F.Coppola. The idea of audio having such significance, interpreting different meanings by certain words obtained through surveiliance.
"Coppola has cited Blowup (Michelangelo Antonioni) as a key influence on his conceptualization of the film's themes, such as surveillance versus participation" (wikipedia.org)

Interim Tutorial ... Mon 22nd Oct '07
Brad Butler 'Non Places' <--book (talked about in Nicky Hamylns work)
narrative of events telling a story (empty areas read things in an image void of text)
disparity in images, put into a narrative.
'Black Tower' John Smith < video and film works
-Fictional narrative - telling a story, make it up (people in images)
dscription/voice overs --> talking about elements in frame, particular detail.
-'Blow Up' (film) takes photographs in a park in one scene develops it a sees a body and a gun in the hedge, by blowing up the image to get a better view and detail.
final outcome/possibles? - slide projection/ or Ipod Video download.
The places/slides are quite banal, construct a meaning. e.g.
the park - rape or murder could have occured in these images
the road - hit and run, etc
'a picture contains a thousand words' an image can project different meaninga to different people.
22 slides in total that i have at the moment, need to construct a story around the slides, scripted.

use www.youtube.com as a reference for videos, if i am unable to get them out of library.
John Smith VHS: Artist Film and Video 'The girl chewing gum'( narrating over filming) / 'The Black Tower'
-diegesis (diegetic [record video footage diegetic real time] and non diegetic [recording from yesterday])
'The Conversation' Directed by F.F.Coppola (plays with off-screen sound)
'Non places'
Voice objective description (no emotion) banal voice. Storybook (editing them together to get description/sound?)

Slides
titled 'Sefton Park'
An example of some of the slides which i had scanned into a computer at college, they were found at a charity/fleamarket place in Rochester some of them date back to the mid 60's and are from Liverpool as stated from the captions written in the slide covers. Questions relating to who took these images and why? as they are quite bland, but this in itself adds an interest to them, something that can be read into, the 'holiday photo souvenir' type image.
Tuesday 16th October 2007 --> About ideas...
Looking more at the transitional/language aspect of what i have researched so far. (Codes/symbols found within an art piece)
Going back to the slides i found in charity shop (hopefully finding more, i have about 16 at the moment or is this enough?)
IDEA: Having the slides through a projector (to what scale, small or enlarged i quite like the idea of the smaller image almost the same size as the 35mm neg, the viewer would have to get close to the image to view details.) <--something to think about. Audio description ---> slides (e.g "Slide 1, within this slide the building takes up most if the frame, colours/weather, etc what is thought about the slide) but having the audio description not in a particular order, so it doesnt match the projection, adds a pyschological aspect to the work, would people believe what they see or what they are told? Link to mind games played on people e.g;
" 3 lines of different sizes are drawn on a classroom board, one being obviously longer then the other 2, one person goes out of the room and the remaining people point to a line that is not the longest when the person returns do they submit to peer pressure and take it at face value that the line they are pointing at is the longest ( even if it is not) or do they question it?)"
Have the audio in quite a banal voice and listened through walkman headsets, so as the person moves around or pauses the tape for whatever reason they affect what they hear and when.
Suggestion 2- put copies of the slides around college and have a check of sheet people can use to see whether they have found them all.
RESEARCH: Fiona Banner 'The Nam'
Joseph Kosuth ' One and 3 chairs'
Martha Rosler 'The bowery as too inadicate a description' looks at problems in photography the person, links images related to the homeless around this area in new york in the 80's e.g a beer can on steps and has a projection if text relating to drunk e.g 'squiffy/comotose' as seen in the images below:
Also look at 2 Ronnie's mastermind sketch as a point of reference. And Epson Printer advert that was present in the London underground.

Questions to think about...
What are your recollections of early computers?
What does the HTML code mean to you?
What does the HTML code mean to you?
TUTORIAL 2 .... 11/10/07
Notes:
Set up a discussion through the blog (Information gathering, encouraging people to add their views.) www.yougov.org engages people by offering an incentive in the case of the website mentioned money is accumulated over time by the person filling in political questionnaires/surveys.
How can i attract people to visit my website? <-- create cards place them around town, incentive??
I'm quite interested in the language used to set up the website the HTML code, i plan to e-mail companies that use this language and invite them to blog...Get them to take photo of work environment--> with computer screen?
(UCCA MA in computer game design)
Look at the shifting of technology, codes/smbols/translation necessary in the programming of computers and the internet. Look at history of computers, i was interest in going back and studying the beginnings of this type of technology. Perhaps printing out the HTML code and producing it into a book as one example of an outlet for my work.

These images were taken with a mobile phone. The mobile phone's camera allows photos to be taken without care of the end product it is about perserving the memory in a compact way. An idea was to incorparate images sent from people's mobiles onto the blog, as each image would be selected by the sender for their own personal reasons, yet the image would mean something else to someone else. I like the effect given by the low resolution.
